Evaluation Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evq1
View more presentations from natty12.
1) In photo one we are show a picture of our protagonist holding the mic this shot is key because is show the citizen main focus is music and connotes the whole idea of not caring about genre and doing music because it is what they love I believe the doesn't conform as it does focus on a sexy female character common to many other music videos

2) In this second photo we see the frustration that our student is going through but if we look into the background we see a very bright which could connotes the light at the end of the tunnel. This goes against the ideas of most music videos which a lot of the time the artist in the video faces no problems, this conforms because it still try aim to relate to the audience as all videos do

3) In the third photo we see that our basketball character is chasing another player some from the argue may
say that this is represent the idea behind the video of people chasing their dreams

4) In photo four we see the word 'education' this is synchronized to lyrics which also says education highlighting the ideas we are trying to promote of education is vital and you can achieve this can be seem as not conform because we are not promoting a fast money lifestyle.

5) In the fifth photo we see the student studying and trying to achieve his goal. This doesn't conform to most videos because it shows the hard work that we all have to go through to get to our goals

6) We see the love that the artist feel toward the music as he focuses on only the microphone this connotes that we must focus on our goals not matter what they are

7) This photo shows our professionalism as we lip sync perfectly throughout the video and help to show our editing skills.

8) In the eighth photo we see the character in nearly totally darkness except one light this could represent hope amongst the darkness as the character is staring forward not knowing what the future holds this relate to the whole image we are trying portray in our video of working hard and so on.

9) In the ninth photo we see the player happy as he feel he has reach his goal this whole scene leads on to the reverse part of the video which doesnt conform with other video of this genre as it treats the whole video as if it was a dream

1) In photo one we see a very stylistic shot for the artist playing the piano at time square with the buildings reflecting off of it and creates beauty as the song is about new york we tie in all the ideas of new with the music.

2) In the second photo we see that they set the tone of song but putting Bruno mars in a dark room with rain falling outside, this illustrates to us that it going to be quite a sad song. The close of the artist is the record company trying to focus on the artist and his voice similar to our own video and our artist in the studio scene.

3) In the third photo we start to see example of the male gaze and how women are represent as this woman in the video is seen as a definite sex object unlike our own video were there are no female interest and we really only focus on there individual success stories

4) In the fourth photo we see a female drinking alcohol this is what some may assiociate with our genre of rock and that whole lifestyle

5) In the fifth photo we see a child being bullied from emimen video he show the struggles that children have to go through at school and essential is very similar to our own video

6) In this photo we see twista in his hope video I chose this phot because it is a similar story to our own and in specific shot they make it seem as if someone had die because of this such as the the all black suit.

7) In this photo we see scouting for girls mem
orized by a female playing bowling this definately agree with todrov theory of the male gaze we choose to leave out any element of female because we thought it may distracts the viewer from the actually story, whereas some video use it to help gain views such as keri hilson the way you love me video.

8) In the eighth photo we see that our video differ from other video with our genre he the killer and playingg there instruments what we have found is that our video go against most rock videos as we do not pay attention to the instruments at all which is common to rock video such as the killer video.

9) In this phot we see someone from the kings of leon laying on the floor this i think conforms with the ideas of rockers and there genral lifestyle, these ideas are not conveyed in our video at all and we dont show any of these elements

Insert poster for digipack

We decided to give our audience a poster inside the digipack as thanks for buying our album

Sound boy records

Our group created a record label which we believed would have represents our band. Our Record Label is called SBR Records, we specialise in music that aimed at a mass audience, however, unlike most others that are also aimed at a mass audience, We only sign bands that we feel hold a deeper meaning of existence, and bands that we feel will make a difference to people's lives. Other artists or bands that will feel will also be on the label, would be artists such as The Roots, K'Naan, Damien Marley etc. We feel that many of other record labels just focus solely on artists that make good music, however, we see past that and build upon the idea that music has the power to change the world.

FInal magzine advert

By being very simplistic we felt this magzine advert didnt challenge our digipack in anyway and could be used both in the UK and in the USA

USA Digipack

We thought that this Digipack spoke more towards the USA market because of how different and unconventional it was and was likely to be expected amongst cover such as kanye west- my dark twisted fantasty

UK Digipack

This was the digipack created by terry we thought this was targeted more toward the UK market

digipack final decision

In the end we decided that we should use both digipack as a fellow student said that my cover looks a lot more american they believe terry's looks a lot more british and typical of a cover in britain. We thought about this comment and decide because we believe that they would be part of a reasonably size company that they would probaly be relase in america also. I think this was a good desicion because it allow us to illustrate that we have a understanding of different audience and how the UK and USA audience can differ for example Harry Potter the book change cover when was release in the USA and even changed name

Conflict

This is the first real conflict that our group has had we had to digipack cover terrys and mine our group was quarrelling over which one we believe to be better and the problem we faced was that we did want to join the two digipack as we believed it would take away from each one and they were very different so a comprimise was not on the table.

digipack individual idea

We each drafted different idea of what we believe would be the best digipack to represent our band this is the cover that I created i believe that my cover displays that citzen cope our a group that cannot be labelled as one genre and don't perfectly fit into any one genre

Rough cut and feedback

we showed our video to our fellow classmates as they are also media students we believed that they would be able to give sound judgement of what was a good video and what would be considered as a bad one and the different elements that would play a role in making a sucessful video, we didnt tell them our target audience what we were happy to hear is most of them judged correctly on what our audience would be. Here are some of the comments we recieved:

Positive Comments
  • We had very stylish shots.
  • The studio shots of me with the microphone was liked, our classmates said they were fond of our various camera angles.
  • They thought the lip-syncing was 'perfect'.
  • they believed the beginning was extremely good and like how we started our video.
Negative Comments
  • Needed more clever editing to match the beat and the footage.
  • Add more cuts, to make use of the footage, and to ensure that the audience don't get bored.
  • Get rid of unnecessary shadows in the studio shots.
  • also we need to illustrate the energy of the song through our video
We believe that the feedback given was overall good and the negatives would only help us to gain the video which we eventually would like to see as our final product

Photography Training

In this session we learnt how to take what is recognized as good photos incorporating the lighting training we had previously got. We were taught about always remembering the purpose of the photos, the example we were given was if we wanted to take a photos of a person face things such as necklaces or the colour of there top should not be included in the picture.

Also whilst at photography training we learnt about the 'Rule of thirds' this is an imaginary grid usually 3x3 outlines the clear levels of an image.
so in this case.
  • the sea is the lowest level
  • the buildings are the middle level
  • and the sky is the highest level
Finally in photography training we looked at exposure this is controlling how much light is allowed into the iris of the camera and can significantly effect the look of the photo. So for this reason we have decided to use the Cannon 450D These camera's have an in-built 'P' feature which provides the user with autmatic exposure settings, in some rare cases you do need to adjust the exposure.

using photoshop

We had to learn basic techniques on how to use photoshop to create our album covers and magzine advert using tutorials from youtube was a great aid.

Orgins of genre: Alternative Rock

Alternative rock (also called alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a genre of rock music that emerged in the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Alternative rock consists of various subgenres that have emerged from the independent music scene since the 1980s, such as grunge, Britpop, gothic rock, and indie pop. These genres are unified by their collective debt to the style and/or ethos of punk rock, which laid the groundwork for alternative music in the 1970s.

The mainstream sucess was limited before the success of grunge and Britpop in the 1990s and it has been widespread since then. Citzen Cope have been called alternative rock as they have no real definative genre.

This is the red hot chilli pepper also said to be in the alternative rock genre we may take some elements from this video and try to comform with some of the ideas that we see in videos of a similar genre

Market research

We created a survey on surveymonkey.com to try and collate data on our audience by giving it to 50 different people we people to be within our target audienc trying to find out different things that they may like or not like if that be the case.

What is a music video

Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos they are:
  • Seeing the sound
  • Narrative and Performance
  • Star image
  • Relation of visuals to songs
  • Technical aspects of the music video
Andrew Goodwin relates the voice of the artist the chorus are all linked with the visuals of the video and help in telling us a story, associating voices with the artist. The narrative is never completely given in a music video the audience fill the gaps of the narrative in their minds, although the main focus of the video remains the lip sync. Andrew Goodwin believed that the star image should develop over the music video as it has a important part to play in the video. There are three way in which videos choose to relate to the song amplify (this is were the video drums and idea of meaning from the song into the audiences head) illustrate (this is when the video outline the lyrics through the video) disjuncture this is where the video goes against the ideas and the song is completely ignored. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextualilty is often employed in humorous videos. Finally the technically aspects this is the effects the on beat editing and all these element which Andrew Goodwin believe makes a good music video.
We in our video our hoping to include some of these aspects.

mood board of lyrics

Treatment

Our initial ideas we wanted  to include much of the ideas found in the original video including a lot of the typography in the video by freezing the video at certain points and highlighting the words in the song. We were going to try and run through three story lines of a musician trying to make it a basketball player who can't beat another basketball player and then finally a student that is struggling in school.

We then decided to change our idea because it was hard to accomplish all of the story lines in the set time period we had also it would mean we would need more actors.

So our final idea was to just to the basketball player and the student storyline as it would mean we would only have to use the actors from our group meaning they would be more reliable and contactable.

Editing

third day of filming

On our third day of filming we put our lighting training in to practice playing with the lighting to attempt to creative the effects we wanted. this is were we had to lip sync and really was trying to gain the stylistic theme that we Had always desired. then we trialed a new idea of myself and Myrin doing the backing vocals to the song. These elements are still being questioned as we don't really know if it will fit in with our final piece.

shooting timeline

second day of filming

We aimed to get the basketball scenes completed but as this was outside we had to face the serious problem of lighting and as we are filming in winter this is even more so a problem. So to tackle this problem we found out that at sunrise is the best time too film as that has the lighting for the day, then found out what time the sunrise was.

Music Advertising, Publicity and Promotion

Advertising
As a new band this is key to our album sucess, but also realise as a new band we would probaly not have a massive budget from our record label so we thought our marketing need to be cost effective so we were going to advertise on youtube videos like our own. throught the band websites and trying to do free gigs to gsin support.

Publicity - generally free marketing
We could achieve great publicity through; radio appearances highlighting new talent, internet interviews, launch parties, being a supporting act on tour for bigger artist should be good as it will help to gain new support who may never have veard of us

Promotion
We are going to create diary videos of the band so are fan can follow us on our day to day lifestyle hopefully increasing awareness. We are also going to create a tshirt with a slogan linking to the album name giving these out and wearing them in videos hopefully should increase awareness of the bands name helping to transform the band into a brand

first day of filming

For our first day of filiming we were filiming myrin scenes in the classroom as it was indoor we didn't need to do any weather checks. It definately helped that it was inside because we had an unlimited amount of time to be creative try different shots. this helped us to get what we wanted on tape and allow myrin to become comfortable with the camera. One of the main things our group focused on was trying to make sure that we optimized the lighting.

Research into music directors

while researching into music video i stumbled across quite a few videos made by hype williams a well known music directors

A signature style used by Williams throughout the vast majority of his videos, shot mostly with cinematographer John Perez, a New Yorker educated in SVA, with a surprisingly 'anonymous career', which includes hits like Clinton's bus campaign into the presidency, was the Fisheye lens which distorted the camera view around the central focus. This was used by the tandem Williams/Perez in "Gimme Some More" by Busta Rhymes and "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" by Missy Elliott; however, it was dropped by 2003.When he experienced his lowest level of production activity since the beginning of his career as a music video director.

Another "signature style" involves placing shots in regular widescreen ratio, while a second shot is split and placed in the upper and lower bars. Videos that use this style include "Diamonds on my Neck" by Smitty, "I Ain't Heard of That" by Slim Thug, "So Sick" by Ne-Yo, "In My Hood" by Young Jeezy, "Gomenasai" by t.A.T.u.,"Check On It" by Beyoncé, "Freeze" by LL Cool J, "Snap Yo Fingers" by Lil Jon and many others.

Since 2003, Williams has adopted a signature style combining a center camera focus on the artist or actor's body from the torso upward and a solid color background with a soft different-color light being shown in the center of the background, so as to give a sense of illumination of the background by the foreground subject. This has been displayed in "Gold Digger" by Kanye West, "Digital Girl" (Remix) by Jamie Foxx and Beyoncé's "Video Phone".

using some of the techniques from this directors we shoudl be able to create an amazing video such as the one above from thwe artist coldplay which have a very similar style to our own

Inspiration

Some of the videos which helped to inspire us

The video above has helped to inspire as it tries to show a postive message through it lyrics and text, we believe that it has sucessfully accomplished this aim

In this much like the video above it has a postive message much like our own and this video has a very similar storyline to the one which we hope to also complete

Character Planning

We are going to have one leading singer in our band so we had to reasearch in to other bands which have a lead singer such as one republic or cold play by doing this we were able to evaluate videos and find outgenral elements of videos from bands like our own and decide whether this was were we believed we wanted our video to go or whether we would not conform to these norms

costume and props list

things we will need to create our music video includes:
  • suit for studio scene
  • genral casual wear for terrys walking
  • school uniform for myrin and his classroom scene
  • finally i need to bring basketball type clothing for my scene on the courts
  • a basketball
we chose these items of clothing so we could give our artist a different look. making sure if was not what you expect by wearing a suit but then some of what you do by wearing a possibly hat common to the youth of today

lighting training

Our group attended lighting training were they taught us different techniques. This is basic lighting known as three point lighting important basis for any real cinematographer or photographer. It was essential for us to know these different techniques as we found that lighting is extremely helpful in creating a music video and helping to give it that professional look. three point lighting consist of a key fill and back light.
we first looked at key lighting shines directly on the person and it is seen as the main light, the key light plays a big role as it can determine the strength, colour and angle of the shot.

The fill light shines on the subject from a side angle to the key and is often place lower then the key light this light helps to control shadows caused by the other lights.

the back light finally serves the purpose of highlighting the contours of the chosen subject.

lighting training significantly helped as it helped us to get a basic understand of lighting and we were told when playing with the lighting we can become creative with our shots create effect such as silhouettes by getting rid of the key light.

Research: shots

our group did some research into various shot we could use through youtube and lloking at previous music videos

Saturday, 20 November 2010

Permission

We emailed RCA records to get permission for the music video. we also found a fan site were they allow people to make videos and broadcast globally so we believe we would had already kid of been giving permission and were not crossing any copyright infringement

Location

Although some may not consider it as so important location is vital to any good production because it help the create the story especially in the case of music videos it is vital because the lyrics many times will come across in the location. This is why we did a lot of research in to our location.
  • Norwood Lakes Basketball courts
  • Bus
  • Classroom
  • A street in South Norwood
  • Film studio
these were good locations because of the exposure to light not just that but how we would possibly be able to control the light with the use of the different equipment (film studio) and the elements such as trees (norwood lakes) and how assesible they generally meaning that it is good for our media project.

"People use location as a language in films, and Quentin uses action as a language in his films. There's really not a lot of violence. It's more of an emotional beat than it is a physical beat."

Lucy Lui

This quotes shows the importance of location.

Proposal

Final song choice

We chose this as our final song as we belived it had the most positives and also the least limitons allowing us to be as creative as we could be

Possible song choices

My group throughout of many different song all be strong music lover were lover at multiple song from multiple genres we brought it down to just a few songs and now were weighing up the positives of the song

Timbaland ft drake: say something

positives
  •  beat heavy song so very easy to do on beat editing
  • also has an basic chorus which would be good for lip syncing
negatives
  • rap song which mean can be hard for lip syncing the verse
  • lyrics could be very hard to work with as does not have an obvious storyline
Trey Songz: can't be friends

positives
  • This is and R'n'B with many long notes meaning it should be very lip sync
  • Has a very simple storyline so could be easy to create narrative music video for song
negatives
  • Already has a video so could loosely copying because we have already seen this video
  • Although and R'n'B can be argued as lyric heavy
Citizen Cope: Let the drummer kick

positives
  • basic lyrics extremely easy to lip sync to
  • with the variety of words can be very creative with video and it's plot
  • doesn't already have a video so has no real limitations on a storyline
negatives
  • Has very basic lyrics which although mean we can create a storyline easy could also go off on a tangent trying to relate to every word
My group and I will have a meeting to discuss the song we will finally choose
